I believe one of our newer posters is well versed in buckles and their makers. As part of my genealogical study, I have been looking into Ichabod Shaw Davis who was working in Exeter, New Hampshire, c 1775-1795. According to Flynt & Fales, he is recorded in various county deeds as a silversmith bucklemaker, but little else is known of his career. Is there anything to add to his history, has anything new been uncovered? IP: Logged |

According to Parsons (New Hampshire Silver), the 1791 and 1795 deed records cited by F&F for Exeter are actually listed as Chester, so Davis seems to have changed locations. Probably Chester is now included in Exeter, but a records search under Chester might turn up information that could otherwise be missed by searching only Exeter. The 1779 deed record and 1775 advertisement cited by F&F as Exeter are also shown as Exeter by Parsons, who illustrates about a dozen different New Hampshire made buckles, but found no known examples of Davis' work.
