I just recently purchased a set of coin teaspooons, only one of which is marked. It is marked Coin and TD Gard. I have not been able to locate any information on the maker/retailer mark, and would welcome any help. I don't have the ability to post photos. IP: Logged |

All I can find on the internet is a T D Gard of Worchester, Mass. who made a masonic sword: I guess it could just be the same person? IP: Logged |

Thomas D. Gard is listed as a silversmith in the 1880 census at Worcester MA; age 46, born in St Johns, New Brunswick. He appears to have moved to the United States some time after 1858, as his daughters (age 21 and 22) were also born in St Johns. I don't find any listings for him in the standard references, so another maker re-discovered. IP: Logged |

Thank you both very much. The spoons' style matches well with the dates provided. This is a really wonderful site! IP: Logged |

Thomas Dapleton Gard was listed in the minute books of St. John, N.B. in 1856 as a freeman and silversmith, and in a Directory of 1857 as Jeweller and silversmith at 25 Germain St. He moved to Worcester, MA sometime betwen 1860 and 1865. 1n 1877 he was at 393 Main St., advertising that he made to order Masonic Jewels . . . insignia, sword hilts, etc. His younger brother, W. Tremain Gard (1844 - 1914, G, S & J, w. St. John 1867 - 1914), was apprenticed to his older brother in 1858 as a gold and silversmith, and worked as a journeyman in St. John, Boston and New York, returning to enter business in St. John in the late '60s. In 1877 he was in business with his son, W.T., Jr., who continued the business after the death of his father. Thomas Gard's mark was T.D.G. in a cut-cornered rectangle; that of his son a lion passant, anchor, and leopard's head in separate punches, followed by GARD in a cut-cornered rectangle. (MacKay, Silversmiths . . . of the Atlantic Provinces) [This message has been edited by swarter (edited 11-23-2003).] IP: Logged |
