Has anyone heard when we might see the republication of the book "American Silver 1700-1850: The Miriam Marble Collection of Early American Silver at the Huntington Library, Art Collections & Botanical Gardens"? A few years ago a copy was published when the collection was first shown at the Huntington Library and was shortly pulled from the shelf. I have seen a copy here in Tucson purchased by a friend and have tried ever since to acquire one. There were notices that it would be published this summer and nothing. Does anyone have a scoop on when we might see this? Any discussion as to why it was pulled from sale? The collection is a rather important group of early American silver and it is a shame that it does not have wider exposure through a catalogue. Fred IP: Logged |

I had an order with Amazon which had listed it as a forthcoming book. A few weeks ago they cancelled my order and changed their listing to "out of print." There has been no mention of the book on the publishers web site, either. In computer parlance re announced forthcoming software that is indefinitely delayed or never forthcoming, it looks like it is "vaporware." I should mention that when the exhibit was open at the Huntington, I went to see it, and when I inquired at their bookstore about the book, no one, including the manager, had ever heard of it. It has not been listed on their web site, either. According to the Amazon listing, the publisher of the forthcoming title (reissue or revision?) was to be Fithian Press, and not the Huntington. It was announced for an estimated ship date of July 16, 2003. [This message has been edited by swarter (edited 12-31-2003).] IP: Logged |

I will have to check with my contacts at the Huntington, but I suspect the publisher decided there was little to be made doing a reprint. The method used for printing the images was costly, though the quality of the images themselves was not great. A nice range of silver was included, but the scholarship was underwhelming and biographical data nearly non-existent. Apparently, the editor had some connection to the donor and there may be contractual prohibitions to bringing in a qualified editor for revision. IP: Logged |

If anyone hears of a source for the older version I would be interested. Even bad research can be usefull. And I did very much enjoy the images I saw. WEV, Please let us know if you find out anything. Does anyone know if the publisher can be contacted. Perhaps there are a few boxes of catalogues stored somewhere. I've sent an email to the folks at Fithian Press to see what they say about availability. I received this answer from the Fithian Press. Fred

I have just heard from Daniel & Daniel, Publishers that the book is now available. Here is the info they sent me. American Silver 1700-1850—The Mrs. John Emerson Marble Collecton at the Huntington I will be commenting when my copy arrives. I have a friend who has a copy of the original printing and will find it interesting to see what changes were made. Fred IP: Logged |
