I have long thought that William Braisted Heyer of New York City was an armorer as well as a silversmith but I can not find a record of him dealing in arms. Can anyone confirm or deny this? I've checked all my books and can't think where I picked up the information. Thanks. IP: Logged |

I have seen nothing to indicate Heyer was an armorer. This is not to say he did not probably do some gun chasing, sword mounting, or the like if the business came his way, but he is listed in city and census records only as a silversmith. IP: Logged |

There is a possibility of conflation of names here, in that W.B.Heyer is not included in the lists I could find of makers of silver mounted swords. There was a Frederick Hyer in Richmond, VA, who made pikes for the Confederacy during the Civil War. Perhaps he is the same man as the F.F.Hyer who is listed as having supplied pikes to the State of Georga in 1862. I could find no reference to any other Hyer as an American maker of edged weapons.
