A few years ago, I bought a better-than-average fiddle pattern tablespoon, of 1820s-30s style and good weight, with a twelve-lobed shell drop and the marks "A. SMITH" and, in a separate punch, "BEDFORD.N.Y." (These are in the style of maker's marks, not incuse retailer's marks.) I couldn't find this maker in any reference book. Finally I gave the spoon as a gift to some friends in upstate New York. Well ... I recently found and bought another four tablespoons of identical form (including shell drops) and identical marks. So now I am 4 times as curious about the identity of the elusive Mr. Smith. Has anyone come across this maker? (I will post pics soon.) IP: Logged |

Alvin Smith worked mid-century in Port Chester and Bedford. The mark you describe, in a serrated cartouch, is illustrated in Darlings New York Silversmiths. IP: Logged |
