Hello: Would anyone be able/willing to help me identify the maker of my piece? I have a very ornate, silver repousse covered milk jug, stamped on the underside "Mulford & Wendell" and "Albany". It is also stamped with a scripted, capital letter "M" inside an oval/circle. I know that Moore designed some pieces for Mulford & Wendell before moving on to Tiffany, but I believe his marks were usually "J.C.M". Could this "M" mark also be his mark? If not, any suggestions as to who the maker might be? Also, is my jug likely coin silver? How would I find out? I have photos of the jug which could be e-mailed to anyone interested..... Any replies/advise would be greatly appreciated! Thanks - Debbie IP: Logged |

Greetings Debbie and welcome to the forum. I hope you'll consider registering. I think we'll need to see those photos before speculating; you can find information on how to post them in the Salon FAQ. Of you can send them along to me and I'll be happy to put them up. IP: Logged |

Hopefully you can get the images to WEV. I have seen the images and they are superb. It would help if you could describe the marks on the bottom. Is the mark border serated? Fred IP: Logged |

I think you are right on. The M trademark is almost certainly Moore's, as it appears just like this in conjunction with early Tiffany holloware marks. Also, the style of your piece is typical of Moore. The J.C.M. mark seems to appear more often with pieces made for retailers other than Tiffany, but it is not a hard and fast rule. Regardless, a nice piece of J.C. Moore silver! Brent IP: Logged |

There are certainly a variety of Moore marks on his "Grape" holloware...I took some quick pics of five different marks on some pieces of Moore.
