I purchased a spoon today that has both the distinctive mark of Zebulon Bradley of New Haven, CT and a B&M mark. I believe it to be Bradley & Merriman, of which Zebulon was a partner, starting in 1826, but the B&M marks I have seen reported do not have a serrated edge around the rectangle, and mine does. I am wondering whether anyone else has seen this particular mark? I know that pictures would help, but I am awaiting the arrival of a new digital camera that actually works! IP: Logged |

This mark?
It is, in my experience, the most common form, but I have at least two variants of it on spoons IP: Logged |

They used both M&B and B&M - I have handled a set of spoons on each of which either one or the other appears, probably made in 1826, the time of the change from Merriman & Bradley to Bradley & Merriman. Your spoon may have been made in 1840, when the firm dissolved and Bradley went off on his own. The B&M punch exists in both serrated and unserrated forms, with the serrated one being the commonest by far; both are shown in Belden. IP: Logged |

Actually, M & B and B & M are two different partnerships. The fist is Marcus (1762-1850) Merriman and Zebul Bradley; the second is Zebul Bradley and Marcus (1792-1864) Merriman, son of Marcus. As Swarter points out, plain and serrated marks can be found for both. IP: Logged |

wev: The mark you provided is the mark. Thank you also to you and swarter for clarification of the Bradley/Merriman partnerships. The explanation of the dual marks is a valid one. Once again, thanks so much! IP: Logged |
