Has anyone determined the origin of silver marked "A PAXTON"? I know Mr. Ruffner attributed this maker to the Danville, Virginia family, but I can find no other references at all. IP: Logged |

Alexander Paxton was listed as a silversmith, clock and watchmaker in Pittsburgh in 1811. He went to Steubenville, Ohio, by 1817, and was in Wheeling (W.) Virginia by 1830. His mark was "A. PAXTON" either incised, or in cameo in a rectangle. The latter mark had been incorrectly attributed to a John A. Paxton by Belden, before Alexander Paxton had been "discovered." IP: Logged |

Family historians record Alexander Paxton's birth as 1794 and in England. However, the census's consistently indicate Alexander was born in Ireland. He died in Wheeling in 1874. As well as the occupations already given, he was a successful merchant and investor. IP: Logged |
