Two small delicate tea spoons were recently given to me and they are either coin or sterling, could the collective expertise help with some insight? They are 5" with almost v shaped drops, no turn down, but a slight forged ridge line on the back for the last 1" of the handle, with rounded ends. They have bright cut engraving and the 3 initials run horizontally. They are marked TU and IV both in rectangles in the last 1/2" of the handle. The form and age (wear) seem to be pre 1790's... Scottish, U.S.,...2 makers, a partnership? Many thanks in advance. IP: Logged |

Welcome aboard. The marks are for the short-lived partnership of John Vernon and Thomas Underhill, 1786-1787 in New York City. See here for further information on Thomas. Can you post some images of the spoons?

wev, I am throwing in another inquerry along with these Underhill and Vernon spoons because this little one is so simular, a 1/4" shorter with a feather edge .The makers mark is A. Billing or Balling. This one I picked up locally and I assume he is a N.Y. maker. Thanks for help in advance. IP: Logged |

Information from WEV's great site: http://www.americansilversmiths.org/ Andrew Billings Major in Revolutionary War. Worked in Preston CT; later in Fishkill and Poughkeepsie NY. A notice appeared in Sept. 1805 that Henry Sadd and Elijah Morgan, Jr. had taken over shop of Andrew Billings. IP: Logged |

Stephen Ensko (1948 edition) gives a version spelt out "A.BILLINGS" as well as the AB initial mark. Although it's only a drawing, it would seem that somewhere in his research he had seen it. IP: Logged |

Flynt & Fales shows both marks, though the name in full is too small to see clearly. Bohan's Early Connecticut Silver lists both Andrew and his brother Daniel, but only shows the latter's mark, D. Billings in script. You'll have to keep an eye out for one of those, agleopar. IP: Logged |

My thanks to all, this forum and all who replied to my querry are a great resource. I will do my best to post images in the next few days, as my billings spoon (bought near Poughkeepsie) has the full name - very small. Also I will try to expand my library asap so I dont keep bothering you all with obviously simple things. Many thanks. Oh and I will keep an eye out for brother Billings! IP: Logged |

One thing I learned early on is that the simpliest seeming question can lead to interesting revelations -- buy the books by all means, but don't stop asking. I look forward to an image -- been wanting one for my file. IP: Logged |
