I have a coin serving spoon with a maker's mark that looks like a WI, but is worn enough that it could possibly be WL. I have found two possible makers-William Jones of Marblehead, MA and William Little of Newburyport, MA, but their references seem a bit early to me. I am attaching a photo of the spoon-as you will see it is a coffin end. I cannot photograph the mark as it is too worn.

Both William Jones and William Little are too early for this spoon, but it could be by William Little's son, William Coffin Little (1745-1816), who, according to Belden, is believed to have used the same marks. You can compare your mark with the photographs found in Belden and with those in Kane, who finds no evidence for the existence of the earlier William Little. That's it! I knew the spoon was too late for the others! Thanks so much. IP: Logged |
