Below are two images of an "H.M" countermark. One is on an 1819 U.S. Large Cent, and the other is on a (date worn) 1 Real of the Carlos III type. There is a stop (period) between the two letters, but none after the "M". The "H" has a spur on the left leg, which may be the result of a die-cutting error. This seems to be a silversmith mark, but no one (in the coin world) has been able to attribute it. Any ideas on the maker?

Well, it doesn't seem that anyone on this list has seen this mark before. Please reply to this thread if you see this mark on a piece of silverware. Thank you!

I do not recall that I have encountered this mark before, but I do have one comment. Although I am uncertain about this, I note that the dot in front of the H is about the same size and shape as the period between the H and the M, and although poorly placed, may therefore not be a spurious artifact. If it is in fact another period, the punch might have been cut down, and there may have been three initials or an additional name on an originally larger punch.
