This image shows a "G.GODDARD" countermark on a 1798 U.S. Silver Dollar. This coin appeared in a numismatic auction early this year (2004). The countermark appears to be an unlisted silversmith or jeweler mark. Any guesses?

There was a clock & watchmanker (one of the allied trades for a silversmith to participate in). George S. Goddard working in Boston around 1823. There were other Goddards working elsewhere in Massachussetts, but none with that initial. IP: Logged |

George Sumner Goddard (8 Apr 1789, Shrewsbury - 21 Dec 1831, Boston) was first cousin to Nicholas Goddard and second cousin to Daniel, Parley, and the two Luthers. IP: Logged |

Thanks for the help with this one! I had forgotten to check Sposato. Bob M. IP: Logged |

Did Mr Sposato have anything to add? I don't have a copy of his book. IP: Logged |

I see that Belden lists a G. Goddard, unidentified
and notes "The mark shown, possibly that of a Philadelphia silversmith, is on a down turned pointed, almost round, spoon with a phoenix and drop on bowl back. . ." A George Goddard is listed in Fennimore's Flights of Fancy as working in Philadelphia, 1790-1820, which I presume to be based on the same spoon. I tried to enlarge the mark from your post, but it is pretty blurry.

It appears that I did not check Belden either. So many books to check for each countermark.... This mark matches the one on the coin (see above) as best as I can tell. The Sposato book only has basic information for this maker: GODDARD, George S. (1789-1831) Thanks to everyone, Bob M. IP: Logged |
