Here is an image of an 1834 U.S. Dime that was countermarked by Stephen D. Choate, a silversmith and retailer who worked in Louisville, Kentucky and in Cincinnati, Ohio. (The image is not very good, due to my 7 year old Sony Mavica camera, but the coin looks great to the eye.) I have silverware from this maker that is stamped with both the "S.D. CHOATE" and the "LOUISVILLE" marks, but have not yet seen the "SILVERSMITH" mark on a piece of coin silverware. That mark may have been only used on coins. There are at least eight countermarked coins known for Choate. Bob M.

Bob, I just bought a Choate spoon locally here in Tucson. It is marked same as your coin with the address 5 Street Louisville and without the word Silversmith. How nice for Choate to have identified his trade. What a boon if all had made this effort on counterstruck coins. Fred IP: Logged |
