As a temporary measure while I work on a full re-build of my family tree project, I have built a site containing the 2,619 silversmiths, jewelers, etc I have researched, but without the family links. Silversmiths and Related Craftsmen As always, I welcome any additional information, images, or corrections. [This message has been edited by wev (edited 01-07-2005).] IP: Logged |

I have taken the time to look over your new site. It is really looking good! I would be glad to work with you to add information and images relating to the coining activities of silversmiths, if you are interested. I have researched this subject area for many years. As you know, I have a countermarked coin collection which contains many silversmith marks. Also, I have access to other collections of the same type of material. In addition to that, I have been collecting coin silverware that has the same (or related) marks applied to it. I am planning to purchase a new digital camera this year, and then begin taking close-up photographs of the marks. I have not seen another SILVERSMITH web site or book that made an effort to include this type of information or images, so this would be a first. Let me know if you are interested, and I will begin sending material to you. Many of the early silversmiths were involved with coin making, coin countermarking, and coin counterfeiting. Some silversmiths made only counterfeit coins (e.g., Samuel Casey), and others were involved with "official" coining activities (Harmon, Coley, Voorhis, Buel, Moulton, etc). Perhaps a "Coining Activity" section can eventually be added to the format. Bob M. P.S. Do you go by the name William, Erik, or another name? IP: Logged |
