Hi all, As many of you know, John R. McGrew, PhD, has been working on collecting and identifying 3 and 4 part psuedo hall marks for 20+ years. He has finally published this valuable work, 176 pgs + a 28 page preface in an 8 1/2" x 11" soft cover format.. The photographs are his own, and are well done and for the most part appear on the same page as the relevant information. The preface contains "how to use" guide + a photo index. Dr. McGrew has taken 500 psuedo hallmarks and organized them in an easy to use, orderly format; by the first letter (if they have one) and then , if there are no letters the marks are organized by item, such as "Anchor", "Arm & Hammer", "Star" (5, 6, 8, 8+ points) etc. The best thing is he has identified the manufacturers that produced the psuedo hallmarks. This is a must have book for anyone collecting or dealing with American coin silver . IP: Logged |

I wanted to provide my praises for John McGrew's book. For years, I have kept a "TBI" box of spoons-those needing maker's mark identifications. It was raining again this weekend in Maine, so I took out my box and my recently purchased copy of Mr. McGrew's book, and the pile has been whittled down substantially! Does anyone know if he is continuing his research, perhaps with the thought of an update some day? I found a couple of marks that might be of interest if he is (some pseudo marks with retailers not on his list). IP: Logged |

Yes, he is collecting corrections and additions, and I presume the address for Argyros (in the book) would be the best way to send them. I would enthusiastically echo the praise; it's a great work! IP: Logged |

I'm sure that he would be interested in additional information that would add to his book. He also published, sometime ago, an article in Silver Magazine that traced the various dies used in the basket of flowers pattern. I know he has continued to study this pattern and has discovered many dies not recorded in his this article. I suspect that if you have any unusual basket of flowers pattern that he would be glad to receive a photo. IP: Logged |

I wish I did have some basket of flowers examples, but alas no! I did find an example of the 1804 London pseudohallmark that is shown in Mr. McGrew's book, accompanied by a retailer's mark that wasn't listed in the book, as well as a retailer mark with a William Rogers mark that wasn't listed. I'll pass them along. IP: Logged |

If we all post our pictures here we can all annotate our books and just send John McGrew notice of were to find additional marks. I do not know what method was used to find out all the information in the book, but additional retailers may lead to further clarification of the actual manufacturer. IP: Logged |
