Stumbled on an early patch or snuff box about 3 1/2" x 2" spotted cowry shell box with silver mountings. I would guess about 1st qtr of the 18th century. It is marked with a head (could be a George III, but I don't think so) and two odd lions (very skinny) facing left. The makers mark is "JRN", and may be separated by pellets, but is dirty and hard to see(could also be JR Pellet N). I am unable to locate the marker in all of the books I have... I believe it to be American, with a Boston flavor, as it has a "Harp with a woman’s torso" engraved on the lid along with a monogram. Any ideas as to whom the maker might be? I have left a heavy bid at the local estate auction and hope to get it tomorrow. If so I will post a picture. "Smaug" IP: Logged |

There is a J. R. N. for J. R. Neill of Dublin, entered 1858, which would certainly make sense with an engraved "Harp with a woman’s torso" IP: Logged |
