I was contacted by a young lady, that has, what has got to be the largest spoon I have ever seen. It measures 16 1/2 inches and the bowl is a full 1/3 of its length. If I were to try to put the bowl into my mouth it would be like a 3 year old with a tablespoon... this thing is huge. It appears to from the 1780 to 1790 pointed handle that tapers to the bowl were it has a unique drop that is slightly elongated but is three dimensional and has three sides like a tri-hull boat. The piece has lovely bright cut scroll work on the handle with a lovely script "FO" monogram. On the reverse is the initials "K W" in pin prick with the date 1712... which made the lady think it was from that period. It has a makers mark struck twice in the back off the handle consisting of a rectangle with a script "HS" interlocked. I have had no luck finding this mark in any of my books. Any help would be great... the lady won't sell it to me at any price, so I have to just try to find the marks on "Her" wonderful spoon. Whine... Whine.... “Smaug” IP: Logged |

I've run across a couple of these gigantic stuffing(?) spoons over the years. The ones I've seen have been IDed as 18th century Norwegian. You mention pricked engraving, which is not uncommon on old Scandinavian pieces. Had the pleasure of owning, for several years, a lovely 19th century Norwegian carved wooden spoon of the same basic form (pointed oval handle, slender stem, oversized bowl) which measured over 15" long. Perhaps the young lady would allow you to photograph the piece. Cheryl ;o) IP: Logged |
