Just back from an afternoon of antique prowling and I picked a few things up that I was sure I'd find right away in my books ... but no luck! The most intriguing is a silver tablespoon with the kind of super-elongated fiddle handle that I think of as typical of Tennessee/Mississippi. It's marked J.C. REILLY & Co. in a long serrated rectangle. (The mark is worn, so I'm not 100 percent sure it's Reilly, buit fairly certain.) Is anyone familiar with this maker? IP: Logged |

Pretty close guess: J. C. Reiley & Company advertised in the 9 May 1816 edition of The Western Courier of Louisville KY as Watchmakers, Clockmakers, Silversmiths, and Jewelers. Boultinghouse notes that they were not listed in the 1832 city directory and nothing further of the principles has been uncovered. Yes ... it is J.C. Reiley & Co. Does Boultinghouse illustrate a mark or say whether any marked pieces are known, or is the firm known only from the advertisement? I will try to get a good photo of the mark, although it will be difficult. IP: Logged |
