Hello all,

Here is a nice set of four early salt spoons, with shell bowls and feathered-edge handles. Each spoon is marked twice with what looks to be an "SK" or "JK" in script capitals. They may well be English, but the double maker's mark does hold out the possibility of an American origin. Does anyone have a reference for a similar mark? Thanks!

Brent

a similar mark is shown in Grimwade for Samuel Key of London (No. 2566); his mark was entered as a largeworker in 1744; he was last listed in 1773 as a smallworker. This style of spoon (Old English Feather Edge) was popular in the 1770's. Small spoons are often marked only with the maker's mark and a lion passant; if the second mark is not a lion passant, but a maker's mark as well, and if it is less readable on all four spoons, it is possible that this may have been intentional, and these might be in the category often referred to as "duty dodgers"
