Here are a couple of typical J Conning marks with the New Moon mark shown on page 145 of McGrew's Manufacturer's Marks on American Coin Silver. The second one is interesting as the New Moon is struck over the J and seems to me to confirm that Wood and Hughes had a practice of stamping the retailer's name on goods before delivery of the finished item to the retailer. These marks are on Threaded Oval forks. There does seem to be a lack of attention by the journeyman who stamped these forks. These marks are on identical fiddle thread soup ladles (one from Mobile and one from Montgomery) and both have similar, yet slightly different journeyman marks. Because of the huge presence in southern Alabama of Wood and Hughes manufactured items, I have always assumed these ladles were make by them. With all the journeyman marks shown in McGrew's book it would appear to me that this was a wide spread practice among the larger manufacturers. IP: Logged |
