Here is a VERY LIGHT but very fine pair of sugar tongs which about half the weight that might be expected. In all other ways perfect and of the style of c.1780-90. Are they American? (The engrailed maker's mark is more usual in USA) I await your comments! IP: Logged |

Okay, I'm a complete neophyte, with no references on hand, but I'll take a swing. By saying they're about 1/2 the weight expected, I assume you mean around 15 to 20 grams. Though I can't explain why, the decoration looks Scotch to me - they ARE known to be 'thrifty' on occasion, as well! I'd guess the odd bowl shape must be a clue of sorts... Silver Lyon... I cannot find an exact mark in any of my refs, PR but not with a Serrated Rectangle Cartouche... However... I have two examples of Tongs with the Acorn shape of the Tong "Grips" ends, and have three examples of the shaping similar to that of the handles and what I Imagine the back strap to look like... The decoration or bright cut engraving does not seem out of character with other pieces I have seen or own... All in All, (my opinion) I think they look right for American Made I would guess C 1785 - 1820... but just a feel more than something I can put my finger on... Hope this helps, but as I have to add to all such guesses I cannot verify by my Ref Books.... PSDK.... Pretty Silver, Don't Know... :-) As a final note, I would not pass them by if the price were right... "Smaug" IP: Logged |
