[19-0587] Hi there once again, I have noticed that occasionally silver flatware (usually spoons) will be stamped on the side of the handle rather than the back of the handle. Is there a reason for this? It would appear to be much easier to stamp a makers mark on the back. Here is an example. Thanks.. Marc

I've never seen that. I've seen the marks on the back of the bowl where it attaches to the handle. I've seen them in the middle of the back of the handle. I've seen them on the back of the spoon end, but never on the side. Interesting. IP: Logged |

Only reason I can think of would pertain only to a specific period in the 18th century, when table setting styles were changing from bowl-down to bowl-up (the same reason monograms moved from the 'back' of the handle to the front). A side stamp would permit the spoon to be placed either way without showing the mark. That transition took time, with some people being early adopters and some more conservative, so perhaps some makers prepared stock that would suit both. Or maybe some customers were just wishy-washy! I have an old spoon (1790-1810: Theophylus Bradbury) with the engraved initials of an ancestor on the back of the spoon end. On the front of the spoon are the initials of the daughter. I always wandered why it seemed to be backwards to me as I definitely know who was who geneologically. Now I understand! Did the spoons face down when set? Do you know of any sources that discuss that aspect of place setting? IP: Logged |

Hi Outwest, The habit in Europe has pretty much been to set the table with the back side of the flatware facing up. Also, Since the back was already engraved, the other big engravable surface available (other than the bowl) would be the front of the handle. It is really sweet to have something like this. It shows that families do care. Marc IP: Logged |

I have Dutch sugar spoon (see my recent post: Dutch Sugar Spoon ) with the purity, duty, and makers mark on the back of the handle and the date year on inside of the bowl. This placement seems to have no logical explanation but was apparently quite common. Tom PS Mark, I am really enjoying the copy of Tardy. Thanks! IP: Logged |

I have never seen this... Is its occurance limited to a Time Frame of Location or do you have enough other examples to venture a guess?

Say! While shuffling around looking for something I took a closer look at a pewter baby knife I have. The makers mark was on the side (Community)! This knife is not silver, but I will keep my eyes open for side marks from now on. IP: Logged |
