I am slowly going through my pieces and photographing marks. Here are two I've not identified. Any ideas?

On a generic 9 1/4" fiddleback serving spoon c 1830 or so.

On a very light gauge 9" fiddleback serving spoon with a very tiny pointed shoulder

The bust-W-star is attributed to Wheeler, Brooks & Co. from Livonia, NY by McGRew with a reference given as Cutten's "The Silversmiths, Watchmakers and Jewelers of the State of New York Outside New York City. It is stated that this mark is apparently a retailer's mark, but the Wheeler firm is also listed as a manufacturer of silver.

C&N is listed by Robert Alan Green in his book Marks of American Silversmiths as unidentified. Not much help.

Yes, the C&N is a real poser.

I am rather dubious of the McGrew attribution. Livonia was a rural agricultural backwater; its population in 1860 numered only 480, including outlying farms. It had a single manufacturing concern worth noting, that making iron plows and grist stones. There is no mention, except as town jewelers of Wheelers & Brooks. Darling does not show this mark, only the full names with an unidentified S & H. Does McGrew give any actual evidence for the statement?

No the only reference is the book cited. One of the marks McGrew has a picture of and the other one is in Soeffing's collection. The working date is given a c1835.

Good enough reasons to put it down as unproved. Thank you for the look-up, at any rate.
