At the Miami shows, a dealer & I were discussing something made by John Chandler Moore. As an aside the dealer mentioned that they had heard that there was a question about ‘Chandler’ being John C. Moore's middle name. The dealer said that other silver researchers haven't been able to find an original source (document) with "Chandler". I took a look at the few original images of Moore's patent papers I have but they are all signed John C. Moore. Can anyone provide a source for the original attribution of the C. being short for Chandler? IP: Logged |

In the Carpenters' book, Tiffany Silver (1978 ed., p. 245), it is stated that John Chandler Moore was listed in the New York City Directory in 1832-3. In his discussion of this silversmith in Venable's book, Silver in America, 1840-1940: A Century of Splendor, p. 320, D. Albert Soeffing implies that John Chandler Moore was the form of his name that disappeared from the directory listings in 1855. The exact dates of his birth and death are unknown, so obviously no one has been able to locate a birth or death certificate. For a long time, John's son, Edward C. Moore, who became Tiffany's greatest designer, was thought to share his father's middle name, Chandler. However, recently a researcher working for Soeffing has located Edward's death certificate and found that the C. stands for Charles. This is probably what the dealer in Miami had reference to.
