Below are a couple pictures (such as they are) of the markings on a mid-19th c. coin silver goblet. The marks are inside the goblet's foot, and very hard to capture, hence the night-vision on 2 shots. The marks read "PURE COIN BOSTON" with what appears to be an Old English style "L". The circular indentation near the middle is not a mark; it is from the making of the goblet. Does anybody have suggestions about the mark?

Could it be an Initial?, I have a Mustard Pot that has the initial on the bottom, rather than the sides where i would expect to see them most of the time...??? "Smaug" IP: Logged |

It's definitely not a monogram. The stamped marks are located on the underside of the cup portion of the goblet. It was marked before the foot of the goblet was put on, so in order to see the marks, you must look through the foot (hence the difficulty photographing the marks). The goblet itself has a hand-chased scene on it, so possibly, the "L" mark is that of the chasher. IP: Logged |

On a few occassions I have seen silver that had a letter system used to keep track of the pieces. As 'L' is the 12th letter, this may be the 12th of a set of goblets. The idea seemed to be to rotate pieces for equal ware. Chairs were also marked in this fashion. Quite unusual, but not unheard of. IP: Logged |
