Does this name ring any bells? The mark is on a coin fiddle handled teaspoon, and is contained in a rectangular cartouche with serrated edges.

Any chance it could be James Berry, of Maryland? That's the only thing close that I could find -- but he may be a bit early, anyway.

It's definitely Berky-I should have included a photo.

An internet search found Berky Coin spoons as a past item on a major auction site. They listed them as C1830. Unfortunately, the post had been removed since it was 6 months ago so I don't know what else it said.

By the way, some people are quite experts in spoon design and can get a pretty good idea where a spoon might have come from by it's fiddle shape.

I was just thinking that sometimes marks were abbreviated to save space, or money in the fabrication of the die. Any chance that there is an apostrophe in the mark? It might be a contraction of Berkeley.

Unfortunately, no apostrophe. I'll take a picture of the spoon and the mark and post it this weekend.

It took a while, but finally here's a photo of the mark and the spoon. The spoon is 7 1/4 inches in length. There is a monogram that is really worn, so I couldn't really photograph it but it is of a style contemporary with the age of the spoon.

There was a James and a John Berkey who were born in Pennsylvania in the 1790's and lived in both Berlin, PA and Washington,IN.
James was a dentist, and John was a merchant.
It may be one of them or another family member. Not much help I know!
