Not sure if this is an american or canadian spoon, but was found in Canada even though if I had to guess I would say american. Any help would be appreciated! (I have only shown one side b/c it looks like all other fiddle pattern spoons

John McGrew in his book on manufacturers' marks attributes this mark to Philo Dubois. Mr. Dubois is stated as working in Buffalo, NY from 1841-81. McGrew cites Soeffing in Silver magazine M/A 1997, page 18. Your spoon is unusual as the manufacturer's mark is generally on the reverse side. IP: Logged |

Actually the mark is on the reverse side! It is unusual because the monogram is on the back! I just looked at a bunch of other coin silver spoons and the mono's were all on the front. That is what threw you off(I was going to post the fact that it was interesting that the mono was on the back when I seen your post! My mistake. I thought I could see the top of the bowl on the first picture. The spoon may have been owned by someone of French heritage as they often put the monogram on that side as that is the side they put up for a dinner setting. I wonder if any of the customers of French heritage ever asked to buy spoons without such markings. IP: Logged |

French is not the only possibility. Many European immigrants had their silver engraved in the tradition they were raised in. So, it could have been Germans in Cinncinnati or St Louis. The monogram on back is really not very definitive in locking in a place, sadly. There is another possibility I have seen raised. The back monogram was for the woman's first name. When she married, her new initial would go on the front. Sometimes it may indicate someone who never married. I have seen a number of spoons with a woman's name on the back and a family name on the front. This seems to have been an occassional practice. IP: Logged |

Some of my earlier pieces have the Monogram on the backs , I think I remember reading that these were placed bowl down on the table similar to European table setting is some of the restaurants on the mainland (France, Switzerland and Germany). That way the monogram would be up and the Tip at the end of the handle turned up as well, and then the person could get there fingers under the handle easily. Just a thought... "Smaug" IP: Logged |

I have a couple old spoons where the monogram is on the back and two where the older monogram is on the back and the newer one on the front. IP: Logged |
