Luman V Quimby is listed at the business of Monroe T Quimby in the 1869 Boston Directory and in the 1870 U S Federal Census for Boston, Massachusetts as a watchmaker who was born about 1840 in Vermont. In the book The Great industries of the United States By Horace Greeley, Leon Case, 1873, the description of Messrs. Quimby & Co's business gives their year of commencement in business as 1860. They had a factory at 26 Potter Street, Providence, Rhode Island and their main office was at 14 Hanover Street, Boston, Massachusetts.
