Hello! I am looking for info on what are the hallmarks of an American silver maker. His name is Sidney Gardiner (brother of I believe) Baldwin Gardiner. Thanks, in advance. Jersey IP: Logged |

Sidney Gardiner worked in partnership with Thomas Fletcher as Fletcher & Gardiner. You can look them both up in Wm. Voss' (wev) database. Marks on American silver are not hallmarks. See the hallmark faq for more information. [This message has been edited by swarter (edited 03-18-2005).] IP: Logged |

I can only add that no mark has been attributed to Sidney Gardiner working alone that I know of. He was in partnership with Fletcher for his entire career, dying unexpectedly at age 40 in 1827. IP: Logged |

If you have access to a library with a run of Antiques Magazine, there is an articls by Donald Fennimore entitled Thomas Fletcher and Sidney Gardiner on pages 642-649 of the October 1972 issue. IP: Logged |

Wev & Swarter! Thank you both so very much. My library does have the magazine I just hope they go back that far. Re the marks, can I then assume that only Fletcher's mark would be on the pieces. Jersey IP: Logged |

No -- sorry if I mislead you. The firm of Fletcher & Gardiner used a variety of marks (two of which are shown here) , as did Fletcher after the partnership ended. I meant that Sidney Gardiner did not have a solitary mark of his own. Wev, You're teriffic! Thank you so much for your follow up, and you didn't mislead me I am too dumb to think that, I needed to make sure I was understanding you correctly. My Dad always told me if you don't understand the answer to your questions keep asking till you do....there are no dumb questions! Sometimes I can go overboard so bear with me. Thanks again, I'll print the mark so I have it, and I will still try & get the magazines and read more about him/them. Jersey IP: Logged |
