In Louise Belden's "Marks of American Silversmiths," the mark is listed as Samuel M. Hopper, a Philadelphia silversmith who works from 1835 until 1859. In this book it appears in what we call a serrated rectangle. Is that what your mark is?

Maker's marks are not hallmarks, which are offical marks denoting quality, origin. See this FAQ for an explanation.

swarter,
And thank you for the information. I thought there was not a difference between a hallmark and a maker's mark ( I'm new to collecting silver).
