I apologize for the photograph being slightly blurry but it was the best I could do with my limited skills. I was wondering if anyone could help me with the hallmark in the picture it is of (1) An Arm Holding A Hammer, (2) An Animal, possibly a goat or a yak, (3) is an Eagle. Any information would help, I found it among some silver items that belonged to my grandmother and this particular piece is a small mustard ladle. Thanks ahead of time, Chris IP: Logged |

It looks like John S. Putnam of Buffalo N.Y. c.1830s-1840s. If you are interested there is an article on him in the January February 1997 issue of Silver Magazine. [This message has been edited by Richard Kurtzman (edited 08-03-2005).] IP: Logged |

Richard, Thank you for the information, I have a collection of silver that has been handed down for generations and I have found researching much of it is quite intriguing. Thank you again, Chris IP: Logged |

The animal is a Bison (="American Buffalo"), and the mark is a rebus for Buffalo, N.Y. These marks (pseudohallmarks) appear with a wide variety of retailers marks in the Buffalo area. IP: Logged |

I've noticed that a number of silversmiths in various places in northern New York State use the hammer-in-hand ("by hammer in hand all arts do stand") mark. I was tempted to offer northern New York as a guess for where this piece was made, but I'm too inexperienced with silver to feel comfortable enough to make such suggestions. I realize this mark appears on silver from other locales, but I'm wondering if anyone knows if the preponderence of examples are from upstate NY? Scott Martin's John Wolfe Forbes thread (that I noted recently) brought up the issue of regional clusters of favored marks and the possible reasons for them. I think the issue of the significance of American marks is a really fascinating one. IP: Logged |
