I have seen references which are sometimes in conflict. So, my question is: whose mark is this? McMullen, Molinar. The tongs were purchased to avoid someone trying a repair and possibly damaging the integrity of the surface decoration. IP: Logged |

The mark is definately that of John McMullin. The tongs probably are also too late for Moulinar, anyway. IP: Logged |

Very handsome bright cut. Curious about the potential repair that might harm the tongs? I assume they have a crack... IP: Logged |

McMullin, ok one of these days I will finish school and learn how to spell. The break is at the bend and I have never seen a decent repair. As it will never be used I would rather just leave it as is. Are the Winterthur photo files available online? Thanks to all. IP: Logged |

The Library Resource system has a limited selection of their decorative arts collection on line at iSeeDAPC. All media are grouped together and indexed by maker's name. Forewarning: their page coding is not great; pages/images may not load on some browsers. IP: Logged |

Just to put in my 2 cents about the break, which is not so bad that a good silversmith used to repairing Georgian silver should be able to handle it with some finesse. As is usual evidence of a repair will be there, but a carefully done job should make it difficult to see without looking for it ( a nice help is that the crack follows the engraved M, so the solder line would be hidden there). Most repairs that I see (and some I am ashamed of from years ago) are done by inexperienced or hobbyist silversmiths. Occasionally one comes across a repair that is done by a genius and it is truly astonishing what skill is shown. The most common mistake with this sort of problem is using too much solder, not controlling where it ends up and changing the “color”. It would extend the life of these tongs if they were repaired, but since you do not want to use them, it would only be for looks (one other consideration is that a repair would take away most of the work hardened spring so they would be less functional than when new), but they would stand up to another 100 years of use after you pass them on.
