I am familiar with how bright cut decoration is accomplished using gravers but have not found any references telling or illustrating how other techniques are done. These would include Feather Edge, zigzag work, etc. Are there any reference works illustrating these techniques. Understanding the hows and whys always adds to the enjoyment of any collection. My questions almost always refer to early American silver. Any suggested reading would be greatly appreciated. IP: Logged |

I may have messed up the link, but there is a good discussion in the American coin forum about certain types of design application. In case I have not put the link in properly, look at the recent discussion on coffin spoon in the American coin forum. Coffin spoon IP: Logged |

Doc is right the link explains the wriggle work/zigzag design. Feather edge is just another type of bright cutting. The graver is used to cut the design with a smooth roll-out by starting from one heel of the rocker to the next. I worked on the bench next to an old time "Western" engraver and learned much by watching. Engraving is not my strength or pleasure. Digging a burin into your knuckle can swell up your hand for more than a week. I use engravers to clean up solder or raise stitches for holding a part to solder. I have great admiration for those who practice and have perfected the art. I might suggest you expreriment on piece of pewter with a sharpened and honed screwdriver. you will see the steps required to make the cuts in early brightcut decoration.
