I was reading a thread you discussed on your site about John Polhamus silver. My father just aquired a spoon of his in an estate lot of sterling flatware. It is engraved on the front J.A. Ruland, then on the back it says PATSUT 1847 J. POLHAMUS (in that order). The "S" in patsut is hard to tell if it is an s or a 3. I am curious to know if this is in fact a real John Polhamus work. If so, would you have any idea where I could compare patterns to find out what pattern it is? Thank you so much for any advice you could offer at all. I could send pictures if you had the time to look them over. I am just trying to help him out. We are by no means silver or antique dealers...he just wanted an International Richeleau meat fork for my own personal set. Thanks again!

Hey!
Look at the thread "showing tmokait a sugar spoon" That is a Polhamus spoon and I put photos of the marks on the spoon. I don't know if Polhamus marked things differently that he wasn't making for Tiffany, but as far as I know his marks always looked like the one on the sugar spoon, but with different second letters depending on who he was in partnership with at any given time.

Does someone here know if he had any other marks other then the 'initial, star, initial" configuration in circles?

Edit: John Polhamus could be marked differently. I just clarified that for myself and didn't want to lead anyone astray.

There were only four design patents issued for spoons in 1847.

Two for John C. Moore:

and one each for Michael Gibney

and Gale & Hayden

(images cropped considerably)

Can you get a picture of your piece and post it?
