Here is a piece of flatware with an interesting set of marks: Bust-Lion-F together with H.D. with in its own cartouche. This mark is described in McGrew's "Manufacturers' Marks on American Coin Silver". It is listed as being an uncommon mgf. mark that may appear only on hollowware and it is attributed to William Forbes. My questions are who is H.D and has anyone seen the Bust-Lion-F on any pieces?

I think in McGrew it's the WF mark that's attributed to Forbes, rather than the bust-lion-F. I'm pretty sure I've seen/have that H.D mark, but can't put my finger on it at the moment - I'm just coming out of an intense busy period (I hope!) and have much catching up to do. But I'll keep it in mind. IP: Logged |

FWG, I think the Bust-Lion-F mark itself is attributed to Wm. Forbes and that the attribution is from Currier. What this is based on...? If you get an opportunity I would like to find out who H.D is. Anybody else have any input? IP: Logged |

Identified in Darling (with similar pseudo marks) as Henry Dennery, NYC c 1819. IP: Logged |

Thanks wev. McGrew monitors this site, so perhaps if and when he revises his book he will include this information. IP: Logged |

quote: This implies he has found the SSFs useful, which is gratifying, but I can find no SSF citations in his otherwise comprehensive book, which I have only just gotten. Have I missed something? Like other "lurkers" who have much to contribute, it would be nice if he could register and join in our discussions. He would be welcome and might find even more useful information to include by participating. [This message has been edited by swarter (edited 09-14-2006).] IP: Logged |

quote: Quite right, my apologies; I was looking at the attribution of the WF to Forbes and missed the note above attributing the bust-lion-F also to Forbes. But you're right, why Currier made that attribution is probably unknowable. It surprises me that more is not known of Forbes; he seems to have used a number of marks, manufactured both flatware and holloware in some quantity, and yet is still often confused with William G. Forbes. Of course the absence of a substantial work on the NYC silversmiths in general is pretty surprising -- although it would be a daunting project to take on. As for the H.D mark, it is Darling where I had found it identified before -- the only place that identifies it, so far as I know, and of course they didn't give sources for their attributions either. But I think I have an example, also on a breakfast or butter knife. It will likely take some time before it surfaces, but I will keep it in mind. IP: Logged |
