Still another Ball, Black and Co. article (this time a cup) has the mark of William Forbes grandson of William Garret Forbes. While Forbes is not listed in Venable’s book as supplying silver to Ball, Black and Co. he did supply this cup and I believe I have some seen other pieces with both the Ball, Black name and the mark of William Forbes. McGrew indicates that the eagle may be a journeyman’s mark rather than a manufacturer’s mark and that the star is a journeyman’s mark. I have not seen great deal written about William Forbes, however his work does seem to come up quite often and from that I assume he had a rather successful company. Rainwater has only a short paragraph and Venerable mentions him only in commenting on Bogert. The book Elegant Plate, edited by Deborah Dependahl Waters does have several examples of his work and a couple of paragraphs on his life and notes his connection with Ball, Black and Co.
