This is a new design for me. I have seen the birds and floral and urn backs but not a combination. This one has an openwork urn/pot with flowers and shell mounting the top. These are the 'gotta have em' spoons which our dog really hates to see. He knows I will be bunking with him. IP: Logged |

If your taste in dogs reflects your taste in spoons, he probably sleeps on the bed anyway! (This is intended as a compliment to dog, spoons and owner!) IP: Logged |

Great picture back and combined with the bright cut spoon even better. Congratulations. I wonder how long it took the silversmith to make such a lovely spoon. IP: Logged |

Here is another unusual back, a reticulated basket with leaves on either side and one 6-petal flower up the middle. It is marked by Nathaniel Coleman of Burlington, NJ. Brent IP: Logged |

Argentum, very nice spoon. Silver Lyon: according to "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell me!" on NPR, "dogs" is perjorative. They are "canine Americans!" Tom IP: Logged |

One of our flea markets of note is called “Dogs’ Day”. It is a great place to trade, sell or tell stories about dogs as they have a special section set off from the remainder of the flea market just for dogs. One can hear the howling from all over the market and it is fun. Actually, isn’t it pejorative only if one is using the word dog to refer to something other than a dog? IP: Logged |

If anyone has the where-with-all and inclination to follow up on this, here is the index for the 1842 will and codicil and the 1842 inventory for Nathaniel Coleman, Burlington, New Jersey from the New Jersey Index of Wills, Inventories, Etc., Vol I, page 109: 14899C. IP: Logged |

The picture of the N. Coleman spoon is not showing up for me above, but I found a set of 6 spoons with what must be the same back: 1790s? Later? I also found a photo of Coleman's desk, which was once owned by William Penn:

Just to clarify, I own the spoons but not the desk and drawing. (Perhaps that's obvious.) IP: Logged |
