Hello -

Your knife is very sweet! I'm afraid I can't help with the H.D?, but I can tell you that Dr. McGrew says the bust-lion-F is an "uncommon three-part mfg mark. May appear only on hollowware." It is attributed to William Forbes, working in New York City between 1828 and 1864. Dr. McGrew shows it as appearing with the initials WF, but the bust-lion-F combo (shown as a drawing in McGrew) is exactly the same. Hope this is a little bit helpful!

Personally, I would class the attribution of the marks to Forbes as idle speculation. I have seen the same sequence ending with the letters W, M, G, D, S, and F on pieces marked by a dozen makers/retailers from half as many states. Until some real evidence is found, such pronouncements should remain suspect.
