The above cup has Joseph Hill's mark on the bottom. The only place I have located this mark is in Belden and on WEV's cite. This is a simply cup with a strap handle. The inside of the cup does have hammer marks and perhaps was made early in his career; maybe early 1820s. WEV lists Hill's status as a silversmith as tentative. Has anything been discovered to change this? IP: Logged |

Sorry for the confusion; to clarify: My use of tentative refers to the identification of the specific man shown, not whether or not someone by that name was a silversmith (or whatever). I had a note to that effect on the various index pages, but it seems to have disappeared after one of the re-builds. I will make sure it gets back in the next. IP: Logged |

Or would it be better to change the note to read: Silversmith (tentative identification) on all the pages it applies to? IP: Logged |

Thanks WEV. Either way will clear it up for me. Identification is actually clear the way you had it, I just misread it. IP: Logged |
