Bradford Whiting is listed as a silversmith in a variety of references -- the earliest I have found is Ensko's 1927 second edition. He is given a birth date of 1751, at work in Norwich CT until c 1787, when he moved on to Great Barrington MA where he eventually died. This is basically repeated by Currier, Kovel, Belden, Hammerslough, et al. So here's the problem: I can find no record of a Bradford Whiting born at that date (+/- 5 years) or dying in Great Barrington. Now, there was a Charles Whiting born to Charles (the silversmith) and Honor (Goodrich) of Norwich in 1751 and Charles senior's mother was Elizabeth Bradford. I had thought that Charles the younger had adopted the Bradford name to set himself apart from dad, but senior was dead by 1765, so that seems rather excessive. Ensko records a mark (hand-drawn) of B WHITING, but has anyone actually seen an example in the metal, so to speak? I have given the son the title for now, but I am not satisfied. Any thoughts? Your surmise apparently is correct. According to Flynt & Fales, "Called Charles, he assumed the name of Bradford, no doubt because of his paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Bradford Whiting." He was the son of Capt. Charles Whiting and Honor Goodrich Whiting. You could also check Fairfield, as there was also a B. Whiting there in partnership with Isaac Marquand., c. 1787-90. Bradford (Charles) however, bought and sold land in Great Barrington in 1787. F&F show a photo of his mark as B:WHITING (caps in a rectangle). Ah, thank you. I seem to be missing that page in my battered old copy of F&F -- IP: Logged |
