Does anyone have knowledge of a maker/retailer by this name? I have a George William Cook (1811-1893) in my tree who is recorded as a silversmith and plater in Waterbury CT, but I have lately seen what I thought was his mark
on a spoon with the distinctive handle we associate with the Ohio area. I don't find a Cook in either the Ohio or Kentucky books. Any ideas? IP: Logged |

There is a George W Cook in the 1850 U. S. Federal Census in Boonville,Cooper County, MO that is listed as a 29 year old jeweler who was born in New York. The reference "The Arts And Architecture of German Settlements in Missouri: A Survey of a ..." By Charles Van Ravenswaay states that the marks G. W. Cook and Cook & Simpson are attributed to George W Cook, but Ravenswaay disputes the latter mark. [This message has been edited by bascall (edited 01-20-2008).] IP: Logged |

Get out your Missouri book; it is George W. Cook(e) of Boonville, MO. I'm not sure where he learned his trade, but the spoons he made are often in the Ohio / Kentucky style. Then again, he may have been selling spoons obtained wholesale from Kinsey or someone. Also, some of his marks have the e on the end, others do not. Good to find one for you once in a while!
