I took a chance and bought 4 spoons on that west coast auction site. They are purported to be by Jesse Kip but I have a small problem. I cannot find a high quality photographic image of Kips' mark. Winterthurs DAPC does not list Kip. Does anyone know if there is a reference that has a photoreproduction of the Kip mark? I will put a photo up when I receive them. There are photos but they are the property of the seller. IP: Logged |

I am afraid I have not found one good enough to include on my site. I can say that his known marks did not include the use of a crown; you may wish to look at the mark of Jeremiah King of London, which did. [This message has been edited by wev (edited 12-07-2006).] IP: Logged |

There are photos of Kip's mark in Darling (NY State Silversmiths) and Quimby (American Silver at Winterthur). You will find Grimwade #1441 a better match. The marks on your spoons are incomplete, as the punch was too large to fit within the narrow confines of the stems - only two of them show the bottom portion of the crown which tops the initials. The marks in Grimwade are drawn, not photographed, so an exact comparison is not possible, but the time is right (entered 1723) for the style, and it is the only mark with these features. You can find one example of Jeremiah King's mark on PhilO's list of British marks mentioned in the British/Irish Silver Forum. The illustrated example is distorted and the K is damaged, but notice the enlargement on the left of the lower serif of the I, which also appears in the marks on your spoons. Given the absence of another similar mark in Grimwade, and the similarities with the photo, there is a good possibility that this is your man. IP: Logged |

I enhanced and enlarged the images then compared the marks to the references and sure enough. Sometimes the prospect of acquiring a nice early set dulls common sense and "slow down and take a good look" takes a back seat. Thanks again. They remain a nice early set of spoons. IP: Logged |

While it may not be your particular area of interest, they are certainly a nice find-those of us who lust after both coin and early British silver would find this to be a happy "mistake"! IP: Logged |
