Okay, I give up . . . What does a tertius maker do? (Honest, I searched first - even Googled!) IP: Logged |

I believe that he made mechanical celestial models, the sort with the planets revolving around the sun. Swarter? You are better with the instruments of science; am I far wrong? IP: Logged |

Tertius is Latin for "the third." It is used as an sdjective or part of a noun (e.g. peroneus tertius, a muscle). I can find no example of independant noun useage for it. I can only guess that since he was a clock and watchmaker, it might be a shorthand or abbreviated notation for a third clockwork movement of some sort. If he were making telluria or some such, as you suggest, it could refer to a third motion: (1) revolution of the planets around the sun, (2) revolution of moons around the planets, and (3) rotation of the planets around their axes. Only a guess. Very few devices of that sort were made here that early - most were imported. Is he listed as an instrument maker anywhere? Mystery solved -- it is used in the directory to indicate the third of that name, though it is set with the occupation, rather than the name. I went back through the directory and found examples where all three were listed: Isaac Rand -- physician Isaac Rand jr -- drugs Isaac Rand -- tertius, physician I will correct my page IP: Logged |

And also could be used for "the third" in a family (III), the son of Jr. (II, the second, or secundus). The inclusion after the occupation rather than the name would differentiate it from this archaeic familial connotation. [This message has been edited by swarter (edited 12-16-2006).] IP: Logged |
