Here is a coin silver butter knife. The first three marks (Bird BS and Arm and Hammer) are listed for Alfred Bunnell, predating his FAB mark. I believe that this mark is from Alfred Bunnell's partnership with Andrew Schreuder rather than his later partnership with Joseph Seymour because I have spoons in this pattern marked H&S for Hotchkiss and Schreuder. Does anyone know this pattern? Have you seen this set of marks with the addition of the Bee Hive before? IP: Logged |

McGrew's Manufacturers' Marks on American Coin Silver has a discussion of Bunnell & Schreuder and Hotchkiss & Schreuder in relation to journeyman marks (p.157), and he illustrates the beehive there along with several others, with both H&S and B&S. He attributes the identification to discussions he had with Albert Soeffing. So it seems that Schreuder rather than Seymour is fairly established. Note for future readers to see also the response originally in the new users forum (Andrew Schreuder pattern) for citations to two Silver Magazine articles. IP: Logged |

Thanks, FWG. I guess I need a copy of McGrew's book too. IP: Logged |

The pattern is LAUREL, which was produced both by Francis A. Bunnell and Bunnell & Schreuder. IP: Logged |

Thank you Trefid, taloncrest also answered in the new members forum. Have you seen this pattern with marks other than the ones pictured or H&S? [This message has been edited by rian (edited 01-27-2007).] IP: Logged |

There's an online auction now for a coin pastry server in the 'Laurel' pattern, and the marks are like the image shown -- except that the top letter in the diamond looks much more like an R than a B. I'll post an image of the marks if/when the item is sold. (A 'Laurel' fork I bought appears to have these same marks, but the letters in the diamond are too rubbed to be readable. I've been assuming they're B and S.) IP: Logged |
