Yes, please.I am still lacking well over a thousand marks for silversmiths in the list. Many of these will never be found, of course, or will remain unproved, but I'm sure a good number can be found in our member's collections. Anyone supplying a clear, in-focus, high-res picture will earn my undying gratitude. Tradecards are also most welcome; in many cases, especially among jewelers and watchmakers, they are the only means of establishing working locations and approximate dates. IP: Logged |

Wev, just wondering as I perused your wonderful lists silversmith, jeweler and clockmaker are the usual and at your site in the related trades list I looked at one, a coppersmith. The question is within the silversmith category are the trades further broken down where you find them (city directories etc.). So are the engravers, chasers, piercers, plater/polishers, spoon makers, modelers, box makers, flat hammer (tray makers etc.) men, burnishers (usually women) after a certain decade in the 1800's listed in their own categories or are they all lumped together under silversmiths? Do you break it down in your list?I know within large firms, Gorham, Tiffany, etc. the trades were in their own departments but would the records in Providence show those break downs? Just curious - Thanks IP: Logged |

At the moment, I use 5 basic trade categories and 55 sub-categories for indexing purposes:Silversmiths Goldsmith Silver manufacturer Silversmith Silversmith, clockmaker, and joiner Silversmith, jeweler, and clockmaker Silversmith, jeweler, and watchmaker Silver chaser Silversmith and clockmaker Silversmith and dentist Silversmith and engraver Silversmith and gunsmith Silversmith and instrument maker Silversmith and jeweler Silversmith and merchant Silversmith and miniature painter Silver and pewtersmith Silversmith and portrait painter Silversmith and silverplater Silversmith and watchmaker Jewelers Jeweler Jeweler, watchmaker, and engraver Jeweler and clockmaker Jeweler and engraver Jeweler and silverplater Jeweler and watchmaker Jeweler and silver chaser Clock- and Watchmkers Clock and instrument maker Clock and watchmaker Clockmaker Watchmaker Pewtersmiths Pewtersmith Pewtersmith and silverplater Other Artist Assayer Blacksmith Brassfounder Cabinetmaker Coppersmith Designer Engraver Gilder Gold beater Gold plater Gunsmith Instrument maker Inventor Manufacturer Merchant Miniature painter Retailer Silver refiner Silverplater Swordsmith Tinsmith Whitesmith The program I use (Legacy Family Tree) does not have indexing capabilities; I have to build the lists manually, so try to keep it simple. Individuals with cross-category trades are listed under each. The twists and turns of a person's career are detailed on their page. There is a Ferdinand Droz in the 1880 U S Federal Census for Cleveland, Ohio who was born in 1812 in Germany. His son Phillip who was born in Ohio in 1845 is the jeweler at this time. The Hannah Simms who is a descendant of the Whites who were the first settlers of Hartford, Connecticut married Charles Droz of New York in 1831. A Charles Droz is listed as living in New York City in 1835 and working as a brass finisher. A Charles Droz is also listed in the 1839-40 New York City Directory at 182 Hester and was working as a brass finisher. There is a Hannah Droz in the 1850 U S Federal Census who was born in Pennsylvania in 1785. An English watchmaker named Elijah Northey appears in this census with Hannah, so it seems likely that Hannah is still running a watchmaker business at this time. There is a Charles A Droz in the 1840 U S Federal Census for Philadelphia, but ordinarily not much information is given in the earlier census's. I think E. A. Giles & Co., Jewelers, was located in Dubuque, Iowa in the 1860s and 1870s, if not earlier.IP: Logged |

Silas is in the U S Federal Census's for Attleboro, Massachusetts as a jeweler, clockmaker and works in jewelry store from 1850 to 1880. He is also listed in Attleboro, Massachusetts city directories in the 1880's as a jeweler. There are at least five Adrich's, all males, who are listed in these same city directors as jewelers Silas's brother William was a refiner by then. Ella and Emma are listed in the 1880 U S Federal Census for Attleboro, Massachusetts with their occupation noted as works in jewelry shop. Is there any other information that would place these two ladies who were in there thirties at this time as jewelers? If not, clerks might have been a better description for them. Sheldon's father Reuben Blackman is listed in the 1850 and 1860 U S Federal Census's for Newtown, Connecticut as a goldsmith and silversmith respectively. He is listed in the 1870 U.S. Federal Census Mortality Schedules for Fairfield County, Connecticut. His occupation was silversmith, and his cause of death was drowned. I think this Reuben Blackman was a junior. IP: Logged |
