Not that real mysteries are that difficult to come by in this field. So here's another one. Whose mark is this on these spoons?

One is tempted to try to attribute this to either Edward Wanton (Richmond, c.1799-1811) or Edward West (Stafford Co,. VA, but then Lexington, KY, 1788-1827). But no mark seems to be recorded for Wanton, and Boultinghouse shows an EW for West with no affinities to this mark. I'd suggest instead possibly Eleazer Wyer (Charlestown, MA, 1752-1800) or (less likely) his son of the same name (working Portland, ME, c.1806-1848). Flynt and Fales show a E.WYER mark attributed to the son, with a note that he may have used his father's mark(s), that has similarities in letter shapes and positions, although not identical. Belden also shows examples of such marks, although perhaps not as clear there. Nothing definitive from me, then - but a nice pair of spoons! IP: Logged |
