I was sorting through a box of spoons I haven't looked at in a while, and found a lovely little teaspoon that has some mysterious marks (to me anyway). They are fairly worn, but they show up in the photo somewhat. The first mark is a TB; it looks similar to that of Thomas Burger shown on wev's initial marks listings-the base of the T is very long. There may have been a pellet between the two letters, but it is long worn. The second mark appears to either be two I's or perhaps a JI, with the first letter being much "fatter" than the second. The third mark, the bird, shows up pretty well. I am also attaching a photo of the engraving on the front of the spoon, which is also fairly worn. It has a lovely bellflower kind of design and at one point had a octagonal cartouche with initials at the end. Any help with identification would be appreciated.

You are correct - it is the mark of Thomas. The illustrations in Belden, which may cause confusion, show this mark under both John and Thomas, but only in combination with the "Burger" stamp used by John. Presumably both marks were used while the two worked together (1805-6). [This message has been edited by swarter (edited 01-15-2007).] IP: Logged |
