I have not been able to locate this mark-there is a reference to W. Riggins & Co. as a retailer of unknown location. The other mark on it is a fairly worn left facing eagle I have also attached a photo of the spoon-unfortunately, it does not do a good job of showing perspective. It is a serving spoon 9 inches in length and the handle is fairly wide 1 1/8 inch at its widest. Any help would be appreciated.

Is the period after the W definite? There was a Thomas Wriggins in Philadelphia 1830s-60s, in a Wriggins & Co. firm most of the time but on his own 1837-42 (see Belden and Brix). This spoon looks quite possibly Philadelphian of that period, and the mark looks like it could well be Belden's mark a with the T removed. IP: Logged |

Thomas Wriggens was a silversmith who worked in Philadelphia from 1811-1868 in various partnerships. In that time he certainly would have used more than one mark, so this one also could be his. The pseudohallmark is worn, but looks like the "Philadelphia eagle" that indicates Philadelphia manufacture; it appears on silver in and outside of Philadelphia with many "makers" marks, so it is likely that whomever this Wriggins was, he was only the retailer of this spoon. There was another (?) Thomas Wriggins (born 17 Jan 1811 in Riverton NJ, died 12 Aug 1882 in Philadelphia), who is possibly the retailer. He is listed in the 1850 census as a merchant (and well-to-do: his was estate valued at $65,000), in 1860 as a jeweler, and in 1880 as a retired jeweler. IP: Logged |

There actually is no period-sorry the photo isn't clearer. I never gave thought to Wriggins-the W is definitely separated from the rest of the letters, but the attribution makes sense. I thought the eagle looked Philadelphian. Thanks all! IP: Logged |

Here's a nice threaded fiddle pattern sauce ladle that probably has one of the marks of the Wriggins partnerships, and if it is, Abijah B Warden is the second half of the partnership. IP: Logged |
