[19-0805] Milled bands are an example of an early application of manufactured decoration to hand made objects - one of the first intrusions of the coming industrial revolution into the craft of silversmithing. Rolling mills produced both flat (sheet) silver for forming into hollowware from about the 1790's, and also produced bands of decorative silver to be applied for decoration and to strengthen edges such as rims and bases. In the period from about 1810-1840, a profusion of bands were produced. Some can be considered basic or standard patterns, as their use was widespread. Others, however, were regional or even proprietary in nature, and thus often can allow the maker of an unsigned or a retailed piece to be traced to a particular shop, or at least to a particular city or region - which in turn could help match an owner's initials with a particular family. In order to prevent this thread from becoming unwieldy, those contributors who post pictures of bands alone (and maker's names when known) as well as those with more pictures and information should post in a new thread (or continue in a related existing one). We will duplicate illustration(s) of band(s) from the other posts in this thread for quick reference, re-editing as new ones are added. We will use in the glossary itself the recognized name of a pattern (or a temporary name in quotes until the proper one is found), and a city, state or region, as appropriate. This information may change as data accumulate. For brevity, at least at first, we will not put each minor variation of a recognizable pattern in the glossary, but will analyze these data at a later date. We will accept by email for the glossary only, photographs of patterns (accompanied by maker's name (if any) from nonmembers or others wishing not to reveal their ownership of an object (we may request more if needed by return email). Should contributors wish to make a more full contribution they should post it themselves (registering if necessary and posting in the new Member Forum from which we will transfer appropriate information to this thread). Email for this purposes only should be directed to: MilledBanding[at]SMPub.com (substituting @ for [at]). IP: Logged |

These are just such good looking images of some very fine silver decorations that I had to take the liberty of giving them a "bump." IP: Logged |
