Last week I was in Columbus, Ohio selling some scrap sterling flatware. For those collectors cringing let me say it was beyond repair. The part time scraper, he pays better, related an incident to me. He bought a 'old silver' teapot as scrap. Upon cutting it up to get it into his melting pot he made a discovery. The teapot had two bottoms. He said the original had no marks but the second one had a mark. He has no knowledge of marks so I did not even ask. I did ask if the original bottom had a tear or hole. The answer was no. It has been melted so I did not get a chance to look at it. So, was this a repair or did someone attempt a fake? It seems unlikely that a silversmith would have bought as wholesale a teapot then soldered on a second bottom with his mark on it. IP: Logged |

The addition of a marked piece of silver to an unmarked object (or one with less desireable marks) was (is?) one method of fakery. Assuming that the "second" bottom was the added one, that is the probable scenario here. [This message has been edited by swarter (edited 04-04-2007).] IP: Logged |
